Your small kitchen can be just as functional as a full-size kitchen — that is, if you make the right choices as you renovate your kitchen. Here, you'll find a few tips that'll help you make the most out of the small kitchen space you have to work with.
Custom Cabinets
When you have a large, spacious kitchen, you don't have to worry quite as much about getting organized — you can have a cabinet or drawer for anything and everything. But, when you have limited space, you'll have to make sure that the cabinets are as functional as possible.
Some custom cabinet features that can help you organize the space and make it more usable include:
Slide out shelving — these shelves slide out from within the cabinets so that you can see everything that's on them, rather than having to dig everything out and contort your body to get what you need.
Cabinet door storage — the inside of your cabinet doors can be used to hold the utensils and knives that you use to cook each day.
Under-cabinet storage drawers — drawers can be custom-made to fit underneath the cabinets. This space is typically unused, but with a custom drawer, you can store canned goods, cleaning supplies or whatever you might not have enough space for elsewhere.
These are just a few general features that you can consider — if you come up with any other ideas on your own, you can discuss what you want or need with a custom cabinet contractor and see what he or she has to offer.
Window Shelves
If you have windows in the kitchen, you probably don't want to block the view or stop the natural light that comes in, but you also don't want to lose the space that you can be using for storage.
Installing glass window shelves will give you some additional space to store things or to plant a small herb garden. The glass shelves will allow the sunlight to continue filling the space and will be easy for you to clean.
Hanging Pot Racks
Whether you have 5 pots or 15, a hanging pot rack can help to free up some cabinet space. These pot racks can be found in various styles, including with light fixtures built into them. Take your time to ensure that it will hang at the right height and will hold the pots and pans that you plan to use it for.
When you take your time and plan what you hope to achieve with a renovation project, the results are far greater than if you go by looks alone.

After I started focusing seriously on making my home look and feel brand new, it occurred to me that I needed to do something to make things even better. I started working with a team of remodeling contractors, and although I didn't always understand their decisions, it became apparent pretty quickly that they understood what they were doing. They worked with us each and every day to make things right, and I was really impressed with their level of professionalism. Check out this blog for great information on understanding remodeling decisions each and every time you complete a new project.
