How To Fix A Damaged Porcelain Sink

Blog

Porcelain sinks last a long time and they look great in your bathroom, but you may find them chipped during a remodel. Damage to porcelain sinks commonly occurs form dropped objects .

However, you don't have to buy a new sink. Most scratches can easily be fixed without professional help. Repair your sink in no time by following these steps.

Prepare to Fix the Chip

To repair the scratch, gather:

  • plastic work gloves
  • tack cloths sponge
  • acetone
  • painter's tape
  • liquid dish soap
  • rubbing alcohol
  • match sticks or tooth picks
  • 220-grit sandpaper
  • 400-grit wet/dry sandpaper
  • single-blade razor
  • porcelain enamel paint epoxy kit or porcelain repair kit

Squirt several drops of dish soap on the cracked area, moisten a sponge in warm water, and scrub the chipped area. Let the area dry completely.

Contact your sink manufacturer for an exact enamel paint match  for non-white sinks. You may need to mix paint colors, if you can't get an exact match. Porcelain sinks cannot be painted with regular enamel paint since it won't stick.

Sand the Chipped Area

Shape the wet/dry sandpaper into a triangle. Sand the area holding your fingers on the tip of the sandpaper, then clean sand dust with a tack cloth.

Take care not to sand undamaged areas. You may want to place painter's tape around the undamaged area around the chip. After you clean sand dust, dab a new cloth in rubbing alcohol, clean the chipped area again, then let it dry.

Repair the Chip

Mix the epoxy or filler according to instructions. A porcelain repair kit will include the paint and filler.

Spread on a thin coat of epoxy using a toothpick, match stick, or the applicator from the kit. Let this layer dry, and add another layer for large chips. Clean spills with a cotton ball dipped in acetone.

After the epoxy or filler dries, sand it with 220-grit sandpaper, and clean sand dust. Before the last layer dries, run a razor blade over the top to remove mounds, then sand as usual.

Test paint colors by mixing them on scar cardboard first, and compare it to the sink color after it dries. Brush on the paint with a small paint brush, and let it dry.

Sand the paint when it dries, and apply additional layers, letting each coat dry, sanding between each coat. If the surface glaze is included, apply it in the same manner as the paint, and let it dry twenty-four hours. Refrain from cleaning the sink for one week, so materials have time to bond.

Understanding Remodeling Decisions

After I started focusing seriously on making my home look and feel brand new, it occurred to me that I needed to do something to make things even better. I started working with a team of remodeling contractors, and although I didn't always understand their decisions, it became apparent pretty quickly that they understood what they were doing. They worked with us each and every day to make things right, and I was really impressed with their level of professionalism. Check out this blog for great information on understanding remodeling decisions each and every time you complete a new project.
