Kitchen Cabinet Options For Creating More Storage In A Small Kitchen

Blog

If you have a small kitchen, then your new cabinet design needs to make the absolute most of any space you do have for storage. Your cabinet designer will probably have some suggestions for space-saving strategies that have worked well for past customers. But here are some ideas to get you started:

Create Deeper Cabinets

Usually, counters extend a good distance past the upper cabinets. This keeps you from hitting your head on the cabinets as you work. However, if you are on the shorter side or don't tend to lean too far forward as you work on the counter, you can choose deeper cabinets that extend a bit further out than is normal. Even an extra inch or two of depth can go a long way, allowing you to store a whole extra row of glasses or utensils in the cabinet.

Vary Your Shelf Space

It's common for cabinet designers to place all of the shelves an equal distance apart. But this can actually waste a lot of space since you're bound to use some shelves for shorter items. To make the most of your space, have your contractor put some of the shelves closer together and some further apart. You can store shorter items on the closer-together shelves and taller ones on the shelves with more space -- with less empty space wasted in between.

Take The Cabinets To The Ceiling

Some homeowners opt to have the cabinets end a foot or two below ceiling level because they can't reach that high anyway. However, when you are short on space, it's worthwhile to extend the cabinets all of the way up to the ceiling. You can keep items you rarely use -- like holiday dishes -- on the top, hard-to-reach shelves. When you do need to access them, you can always stand on a stool.

Include Some Built-Ins

Building some specialized storage compartments into your cabinets can allow you to store oddly shaped items more efficiency. For example, a few racks that you can slide cookie sheets into keep you from having to awkwardly cram these sheets into a too-small cabinet. A spice rack keeps your spices neatly organized so you don't have to waste a whole shelf but still be unable to see the ones in the back. Show your cabinet designer what items you have to store, and they can recommend specific built-in storage compartments to meet your needs.

Understanding Remodeling Decisions

After I started focusing seriously on making my home look and feel brand new, it occurred to me that I needed to do something to make things even better. I started working with a team of remodeling contractors, and although I didn't always understand their decisions, it became apparent pretty quickly that they understood what they were doing. They worked with us each and every day to make things right, and I was really impressed with their level of professionalism. Check out this blog for great information on understanding remodeling decisions each and every time you complete a new project.
